Policy seminar "The Arab Revolts: A European Awakening" 30-31 January 2012

The Clingendael Institute in cooperation with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized a EU policy perspective seminar, titled ‘The Arab Revolts: A European Awakening?’. The seminar took place on 30-31 January 2012 at the premises of the Clingendael Institute in The Hague. A year after the first uprisings in the Arab world, the question remains how the political turmoil in the region will transform the relation between the EU and its Southern Neighbours. The seminar concentrated on democratisation, the rule of law and economic development in the MENA region. In particular the situation in Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco and Jordan were discussed in more detail during the workshop sessions. Due to the inspiring contributions of the guest speakers and the reactions of the participants during the seminar, there was a vivid debate on how and by what means the EU could make a difference in the MENA region.
