Clingendael Academy and the Institute of Diplomatic Studies sign cooperation agreement
May 16, 2012. On May 7, 2012, Mr. Ron Ton, Director of the Clingendael Academy – responsible for the Diplomatic Training Program - and Mr. Abdulkarim H. Al Dekhayel, General Director of the Institute of Diplomatic Studies, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between both institutes. Klaarwakker en paraat: minister Hillen over het groeiende risico van onveiligheid

Tijdens de bijeenkomst over de NAVO-top in Chicago van de Atlantische Commissie op 14 mei 2012 sprak minister van Defensie Hans Hillen over het groeiende risico van onveiligheid. In dit kader refereerde hij naar de Clingendael Strategische Monitor 2012: 'In de Strategische Monitor 2012 komt het Instituut Clingendael tot de conclusie dat het internationale systeem zich naar een onzekerder situatie heeft bewogen en beweegt. Het risico van onveiligheid is toegenomen. Volgens dat rapport, getiteld "Continuďteit en onzekerheid in een veranderende wereld", moet rekening worden gehouden met een groeiend aantal indirecte risico’s. Een aanval op het NAVO-grondgebied kan niet worden uitgesloten. Ook de bedreiging met cybermiddelen, de onzekere energievoorziening en de kwetsbaarheid van logistieke lijnen naar onze landen zijn een groeiende zorg voor de toekomst. Inmiddels komt daar ook nog de haperende economie bij, met alle verstoringen en onrust van dien. De democratische rechtsstaat moet in onze jaren klaarwakker zijn, 24/7. Klaarwakker en paraat. Onze belangen zijn wereldwijd. De bedreigingen daarvan zijn dus ook wereldwijd. Er is heel veel werk aan de winkel.', aldus minister Hillen. Demand Reduction During Low Wind Periods
May 14, 2012. Demand response is often mentioned as one of the means for reducing the necessary back-up capacity of wind power. This briefing paper examines in more detail demand response’s potential to reduce the amount of fossil-fuel-based back-up capacity of wind. The aim of this briefing paper is to place some of the findings of other studies into perspective and in this way to contribute to the discussions around different Roadmap scenarios. Read more»
Meinummer Internationale Spectator
May 14, 2012. Een halve eeuw geleden kende de Internationale Spectator een reeks Afrikanummers, de zg. Afrikaserie, die werd verzorgd door het Afrika-Studiecentrum te Leiden. Zo bevatte het vijfde Afrikanummer van mei 1967 artikelen over Afrika in de wereldpolitiek, de Nigeriaanse politieke situatie, de regering-Boumedienne in Algerije, de Afrikaanse ombudsman en Oostafrikaanse integratie. Op de rug van deze nummers in boekjesformaat stond een zwarte stip. Het meinummer 2012 kwam wederom samen met het ASC tot stand, dat zijn 65-jarig jubileum viert. De giraf op het kleurenomslag ziet reikhalzend uit naar de elf artikelen, die een terrein bestrijken van de Hoorn van Afrika en Zuid-Soedan via Kameroen en Nigeria tot de Democratische Republiek Congo en Zuid-Afrika. Thema’s: hulp, handel, landbouw, mobieltjes, grondstoffen, identiteit, ANC, Afrikaanse Unie, ANC verkiezingen, etniciteit, kindsoldaten. Read more»
Think Tank Roundtable on the EU Multiannual Financial Framework 11 May
May 11, 2012. At the end of June 2012 the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU will come up with a negotiating box for the negotiations on the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2014-2020. The euro crisis has its effect on the dynamics in the process and the EU budget is now often seen in light of austerity and the net contributors-debate. It is not unimaginable that the discussion will lead to further cuts in the budget. Where will these cuts be? Will they contribute to economic growth and what are the opportunity costs of certain choices by member states? In addition, recent elections has shown that people are tired of cuts and as a result votes shift to the left. This event has two goals. First, to exchange views of think tanks from all over the EU. Secondly, we will try to find some common ground how to approach the negotiations on the MFF. Read more»
